Description: Mithras and the White Bull. The Crystal Cave, Book II, Chapter 3 - Merlin's vision: The Roman god slays the sacrificial bull.
In 1983 Greg Hildebrandt painted 14 beautiful pieces for a 1984 Mary Stewart, Merlin calendar. At that time Lady Mary Stewart was William Morrow Publishing’s Best Selling Authoress. The paintings were based on her novels, The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills and The Last Enchantment. These novels are her take on the Arthurian legend of King Arthur and Merlin the Magician.
Greg does preliminary sketches to determine his composition and lighting sources. Then he poses models and does a final sketch. The final sketch is the one he transfers either to a canvas or a board.
This is one of the final sketches for the 1984 Mary Stewart Calendar. They have never been available for sale prior to now.
