Since its original publication, Phantom of the Opera has been seen in books, on stage, and in film! It is a sad and beautiful story of unrequited love, of man's inhumanity to man, and of the emotional torture for a life being lived outside of what society considers to be 'normal'. The end result is clear in this story. Because of his deformities, Eric (the Phantom) was treated like a monster, and so he became one. In 1988, Greg Hildebrandt chose this story for one of his illustrated classics. Greg has always loved the story of the underdog in classics like, 'The Phantom of the Opera', 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame', and 'Frankenstein'. It took Greg approximately 8 months to illustrate this book. There was extensive research needed, because it is always important to Greg to be as accurate as possible when creating setting and costuming within a specific time period. As with most of his illustrated classics, Greg enjoyed making a cameo appearance, and so he posed himself in several of the paintings. It was a great honor when Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Weber's wife and original Christine on broadway, agreed to write the introduction for Greg's edition of Phantom of the Opera. Greg's paintings depict this masked, disfigured musical genius in his shadowy underworld.
