Description: The fourth piece in Greg Hildebrandt's Kid Stuff series, Bedtime Story, is one of only a handful of compositions in which the artist places the subject matter directly in the center of the picture window. In this painting, Hildebrandt has perfectly captured the essence of a child's nightmare. The viewer is instantaneously transported back to their own childhood. Nights spent, listening raptly to the oncoming climax of an increasingly terrifying story. Sheets gripped tight and pulled up to your eyes. Wondering what sort of horrors may be in store. The puppet storyteller sits erect, clothes disheveled, the light and shadow turning its mouth into an endless gaping maw. However, It is the eyes that transfix the viewer, keeping them locked firmly into place. The feeling of unease is so intense, it would almost come as a relief to have the puppet look back at you, but it refuses. The offset gaze of the storyteller leaving you to wonder if he might not just be distracting you until the true nightmare begins.
